A big year for tobacco retailing
The trade press are really highlighting the issue of the upcoming changes that will be seen in supermarkets with regards to the display of tobacco… or rather the lack of display.
The sales uplift for smaller format retailers such c-stores, off-licences, newsagents & forecourts has been estimated to be anywhere between £0.5bn to £1bn. Retailers will need to consider the uplift within other categories commonly purchased with cigarettes too. The most commonly purchased cross-categories are newspapers, confectionery, milk, soft drinks and alcohol.
As this is issue is so critical to both the supermarket and convenience channel, him! will be conducting an extensive study to look at the impact of the new legislation.
The impact and opportunities stretch further than just the tobacco category alone. Convenience retailers and manufacturers/suppliers of categories found at the kiosk in supermarkets or commonly purchased with tobacco products need to understand the challenges and opportunities that are ahead.
